Where can I find peer-reviewed articles on barriers to accessing health care in rural New Zealand?

Searching the Library Search

  • go to Library Search 
  • enter your keywords in the search box. e.g. barriers rural health access Zealand.  For an indigenous perspective you could also include the relevant ethnicity or ethnicities e.g. barriers rural health access Māori
  • change "Everything" to "Journal articles"
  • click the Search button (A magnifyfing glass icon).
  • In the right column tick next to Peer-reviewed journals and Apply filters
  • Select the Publication Date if you need up-to-date articles e.g. Select 2015-2025 and click Refine.
  • To retain the peer-reviewed and date of publication filters for your next search click on Remember all filters.

Referencing

For any entry in Library Search you can click on the citation icon to see the APA referencing. Click on Copy citation to clipboard to paste the reference into your reference list then check it against your Ara APA Referencing guide to ensure it is correct.

Finding Government reports and statistics

For official government reports on bowel screening in New Zealand, search using Site:.govt.nz after your keywords e.g.

Using Pubmed database

 

Pubmed holds articles managed by the US National Library of Medicine. Access it from the Databases A-Z. For any articles that are not in full text, copy and paste the journal article title into Library search and click on "Journal articles" to search most of the Ara databases at the same time.

 

Recommended books

McMurray, A., Munns, A., & Clendon, J. (2019). Rural and remote area practice. In  Community health and wellness : principles of primary health care (6th ed., pp. 101). Elsevier.

Ross, J., Mann, S., & Whiddon, K. (Eds.). (2023). Rural landscapes of community health : the Community Health Assessment Sustainable Education (CHASE) model in action. Springer.  (This is New Zealand based).

Using Google Scholar

 

Google scholar also finds academic articles. Remember to filter your results to only show the last 10 years if you need up-to-date information. Use speech marks around phrases e.g. "rural nursing". Look for [PDF] or [HTML] to the right of each result to get the full text.

 

For any articles that are not in full text, copy and paste the journal article title into Library search and click on Journal articles to search most of the Ara databases at the same time.
